Dei Xhrist: Locusts of Control

So some guy on FB sent me a message, listing obscure female art/noise artists, and I ignored it because: FB/creepy creeps. When I finally responded, I learned he was a friend from college (second year SCAD), and what do you know, Psychic TV is a gateway listen to noise in all its beautiful discord.

These two pieces are my second attempt at extending signatures, layering, distortion and sampling using a live performance and a field recording. Track one is a creepy crawl through an abandoned bridge under the interstate to attend a glossolallic lecture for your degree in Cult Studies. Track two captures a lot of the atmospheric feel of a live event, with audience clatter giving way to a torch song of spreading wings gliding in to Lynch territory. Track 3 is back to the hymnal experience that is characteristic of my live performances.

Onomastic Records: Ghost Ship Love Letters

Track #14: Pearl Diver

On December 2, 2016, a tragic fire struck the Ghost Ship, an artists’ collective and DIY music venue in Oakland, California. 36 people were killed that night, including performers and audience members. ‘Ghost Ship Love Letters’ is a message of sympathy and solidarity, from alumni and friends of the electroFLUX Experimental Music Series in Erie, PA to the families affected by this event. All proceeds from sales of this compilation will go to the Fire Relief, Recovery, and Resiliency Fund established by Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supporting the arts and technology in the Bay Area.

Second track was recorded at 119 Gallery, Lowell MA during a show headlined by Jaap Blonk. I found several catalogs of modern furniture, all chocolate and black and white and chrome and, most importantly, thick stock that made ideal CD sleeves. The handmade name stamp was revived, and a new stamp cut for the CD sticker, based on a self-amusing painting by Penny Bruce, who has been kind enough to hold the camera for many birdorgan performances. You can hear her laughing on the last track. The inset includes a folded page torn from an encyclopedia of North American birds. You know, the one without the gannet. Mike Fun flexed some lingual muscles for the song titles and the CD title. The actual One and Halfth Defenestration of Prague probably has little lasting effect on modern aldermen, while we certainly have chucked prog rock (and Kraut- and space-rock) out of the experiential window, with tiny confetti in their hair.

Remember those free AOL discs in metal tins and composite board boxes? We saved about 100. The bird silhouette was snipped from a scrap of sheet aluminum, and the legs are wire coat hanger bits hot glued to the back. I also glued a length of coat hanger to the back, so that I could hold the silhouette in place while I spray painted the surface after sanding and a base coat. And then this guy broke it.

Here we have the themes of space and distance abstracted within the selections on this album. The maps were from 50’s – 70’s National Geographic magazines that countless households have saved to keep the closet from having too much storage space. The title was cut out of a scrap of Yupo paper, which has held up over 100+ sprays (cardboard, on the other hand, holds up for about 3 sprays).

First edition released in a hand cut and folded box form made from some heavyweight artist’s paper that Pat O’Neil (Skincrime, Self Abuse Records) gave Marc when he moved. The dripped edge has one “finger” that tucks in to an oval opening to keep the package closed. A stamp made of a block of wood and some cut fun foam announces the band name. This edition of about 70 was a pain in the wrist. Look, Cricuts didn’t exist back then OK?
